Thai food is rightly popular the world around incorporating as it does fresh seafood, fresh vegetables, pungent herbs, and wonderful tropical fruits. There is a huge variety of options when it comes to eating out in Ao Nang and Krabi. Whilst some of the ubiquitous European/American chains have found their way here these are best avoided as they are really expensive, and better quality and value for money is found from local restaurants.
Many restaurants along the beachfront at Ao Nang serve a mixture of Thai and European foods to cater for the tourist taste, with menus in several languages. Off the beaten track, and in Krabi town you will find restaurants which cater more to the local Thai taste, and you will be able to sample some truly delicious dishes, beyond the standard green curry or pad thai.
Hawker stalls, tuk tuk food stalls, and night time food markets are very good places to get authentic Thai food at very cheap prices. If you want an in depth restaurant guide, go to Yourkrabi.com which is written by a local who has tried and tested most of them. There is a Your krabi guide book in each of the houses.
Some of our favourites in no particular order are:
Ruen Mai, and Ruen Tip in Krabi Town
The Orchid Garden on the road towards Klong Muang. Lovely setting in a tropical garden, with good food.
Lo Spuntino - a great choice for very good Thai food and excellent Italian at the same restaurant - particularly good for families, on seafood street in Ao Nang.
After the Tsunami - fresh seafood restaurant at the end of Nopparat Thara Beach. Here you choose your seafood from the tanks or the display and have it cooked to your requirements. Excellent.
Ton Sai - Tasty Thai food, in a very basic setting. Also a good place to go and get a take away for lunch at home.
